The current project aims at expanding the understanding of learning through play by including new foci on child exploration type and parental support of child exploration, interactive and socio-emotional skills (as seen in pretend play) and the significance of characteristics of the actual toy in the playful child-caregiver interaction. Exploration is understood as an overall approach to the child´s investigative interaction with the world within which various forms of play may or may not occur. The present study sees child play as an important part of overall child development that serves important developmental processes such as promoting the young child's capacity to experience, regulate and express emotions, form close and secure relationships, and to explore their surroundings and learn new skills.
