Sexuality, Language, and Gender

The researcher group is a continuation of the focus group centered around the prevention and treatment of children, who have been victims of sexual abuse. The team combines basic scientific research on infantile sexuality and sexual abuse with applied research on epidemiology and psychosocial consequences of sexual abuse of children. The focus is still infantile sexuality, sexual abuse of children, and interventions, that are both preventive and therapeutic in character, but this group wanted to broaden the research field and anchor it in a psychological approach that is based in a tradition of human science, both due to the fact that answering the questions posed in this field often will call for a complex approach, and also because we hereby set the stage for a cooperation with other broad subject areas within the field of research, as specified by the title, where:
- Sexuality is understood within a developmental perspective with a focus on what characterizes sexual development during childhood, and how it differs from adult sexuality, with puberty as a marker of this change in development.
- Language is relevant to include both in a broad semiological sense as signs and as a language of symbols, as focus can be directed on how we by means of language create meaning that does not submit to being captured unequivocally.
- Gender does not simply concern the biological difference between the sexes. Gender is in addition a cultural, social, and psychological phenomenon, and also language plays a part in ascribing meaning to gender. With this field we wish to create knowledge about and interest in gender research within a broad psychological/cultural perspective.
With an embeddedness in a critical human scientific tradition the research field will be inviting to cooperation with relevant subject areas such as social science, law, medicine, and gender research.
