Talk on Literal symbol manipulation by Gergely Csibra - postponed

Professor Gergely Csibra from Central European University Vienna will give a talk on the subject 'Literal symbol manipulation'.

Date: 25th November, 2021 at 3:30 pm.

Venue: CSS, room 2.0.12, Øster Farimagsgade 5, 1353 Copenhagen K.

Abstract of the talk:

I propose the existence of a system of core cognition that is embedded in infants’ and children’s communicative competence and is devoted to dealing with public symbols that are not, or not necessarily, linguistic in nature. In this system, real physical entities (such as objects) serve as symbols for discourse referents (tokens of concepts), and the literal manipulation of these symbols serves as spatiotemporal predication on the referents. I show that some existing findings from infants and adults could be reinterpreted as evidence of the operation of this system, and present some recent studies that tested predictions derived from this proposal.
