Research Interests

  • People’s self-views are typically more positive than more objective tests indicate. For instance, people consider themselves smarter than intelligence tests indicate and people consider themselves nicer to others than those others indicate. Stated otherwise, people typically wear rose colored glasses when they look in the mirror—they self-deceptively enhance themselves. At the same time, almost every cultural group comes with stern humility norms that oppose such self-enhancement. In Denmark, for example, those norms are part of the Law of Jante. One line of my research seeks to elucidate the self-enhancement phenomenon, humility norms, and their interplay.
  • People constantly evaluate other people and themselves. Those evaluations are typically guided by two questions: How high or low is this person’s social status? And how benevolent vs. malevolent is this person? Stated in psychological terms, people primarily care about the two dimensions of agency (social status) and communion (benevolence). Agency and communion are so central across diverse branches of psychology that they have been termed the “Big Two” or the “fundamental dimensions” in psychology. But why are agency and communion so central and with what effect for our behavior and, ultimately, for our species? The second line of my research seeks to elucidate those questions and many more regarding agency and communion.
