Socialization Theory and Research

The Research Group for Socialization Theory and Research (SoTaR) organizes researchers interested in the process of socialization. The concept of socialization entails the many ways in which society produces individual subjectivity throughout the life course. Our interdisciplinary approach includes insights from both psychology and sociology.

With the subject as a key concept, we work on a variety of different themes relating to socialization, e.g., discourses, public spheres, technology and aesthetics. Although these themes are quite diverse, they all relate back to the primary problem of how society influences individual subjectivity, i.e. how the subject is socialized.

SoTaR focuses its research on problems relating to socialization and subjectivity. As such it is interdisciplinary and informed by both psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology and biology. Research areas are:

  • Technology (How technology as a part of society functions and makes possible socialization)
  • Aesthetics (How aesthetic experiences are mediated by and functions as types of socialization)
  • Discourses and subjectivity (How do discourses mediate processes of socialization)
  • The public sphere (How does the structure of society including its publics relate to the socialization of the subject)

We carry out our research using both quantitative (e.g., questionnaire-based survey and register-based studies) qualitative methods (e.g., participatory observation and interviews) as well as theoretical work.
