Why Philosophy of Psychology?
Inaugural lecture by Professor Thor Grünbaum.
Abstract
What does philosophy add to our scientific knowledge of human cognition? Philosophy helps us understand the consequences of our choices. Scientists make choices when they operationalize psychological phenomena, design experiments and measures, collect and analyze data, and model cognitive processes. In this lecture, I argue that vague theorizing in contemporary scientific psychology has bad consequences for the validity of experimental designs and the replication of experimental results. This leaves cognitive neuroscientists with an important choice. If all goes well, I will tell you what that choice is and what it implies.
Reception
